“The Rose, the Butterfly, the Bee and the Moth” is a photographic art book that was published to coincide with the Japanese tour of mimi Duo (musicians Duncan Gardinar and Setsu Masada) in March 2016. Their musical score “Falling Like Tears” was inspired by this book, originally created in 2009 by artist Jo Darvall.
This self published book was printed locally on 100% recycled stock using vegetable based inks. It was really important that we could ride our bikes to where we needed to source materials in order to have the book made here in Fremantle, WA. We wanted to leave the smallest footprints in the making and production of this book. Most importantly, we loved working together as a team, having a laugh along the way and enjoying the whole process.
Thanks to Jo Darvall for inviting me to design the layout and produce the book. Original story was written by Jane Harrison, translations by Setsu Masada, book design and production by myself. These limited edition artist books are available at the Fremantle Arts Centre (FAC) and New Edition Bookshop (order online).
Also thanks to the Victorian State Library Rare Books for choosing to add this self published book to its collection!
